Title: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Authors: Seth Grahame-Smith, Jane Austen
“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.”
I am a huge Jane Austen fan, so when I first heard about this book I was unsure about what to feel about it.
“They are going to ruin my Mr. Darcy with zombie gore.”
“I don’t know if I can let myself read it. It might ruin the real love story”
“I am not reading in protest of a publisher ruining good literature just to increase sales!”
That is when I finally looked down from my high horse to see all of the other trash and utter brain candy I have read and enjoyed. I do have to admit I do have the Twilight series on my book shelf… I read it… in a week… all though it was a poorly written teenage Christian vampire/stalker “love” story, it did keep me entertained for 4 very long books and 5 movies.
So how bad could it be?
It wasn’t just, bad…
IT WAS BAD ASS!!!! I actually really liked it.
Overview:
The story begins about 50 years after a mysterious plague has fallen upon the village of Meryton. The dead are returning to life. (Insert typical zombie lore here – they wake up, they want to eat you; mostly brains, and one bite to someone not dead and with in hours they turn into a zombie.)
Enter the Kick ass Bennett sisters all trained in Shaolin Martial arts. They are the best zombie killers in the village. At least they are until Mr. Darcy shows up.
All of the main love story items are still intact; however there is just the added bonus of ball and dick jokes, instead of just a quick tongue and sharp wit.
All of your Favorite speeches are included but with a little extra kicked in.
One of the most amazing parts is instead of just being a crabby old bitch, Lady Catherine is known through-out the country as a famous zombie killer with her own army of NINJAS!!!!
I could keep going on and on about the awesome add on’s in the story but that would ruin it for you. (Just read it… you might just love it like I did)
What I loved about it:
Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy, Lizzy Bennett, Quick witted love story + Zombies, Martial arts, A Katana, did I mention zombies?, Ball and dick jokes, NINJAS!!! Oh and um yeah… ZOMBIES!
Adding the silly jokes, the martial arts and zombie story line makes the story more attractive to someone that might never have read the original Pride and Prejudice.
What I didn’t like about it:
Really the only thing that I didn’t like about the book was the writer was a man. It isn’t because I think that he is a bad writer, it is because I felt that it changed the tone and voice of the story.
Half of the book is written by a woman the other by a man. You can see the difference in style and the way he would say things verses a women.
I feel like a woman would have done a better job keeping the tone and voice of the story with the addition of the funny kick ass zombie story line.
I would recommend this book to anyone but I would just remind the reader to keep an open mind especially if they are a Jane Austen fan.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars – ****
